This was a gift to me this morning. Today marks 5 years since I lost my baby in the second trimester of pregnancy. It is a complicated grief- a grief of a future that could have been, a grief of visceral memory, a grief of knowing my daughter could not have been if not for this loss. I can see the connection to our current moment. One of the things I find most valuable about your writing is your ability to stretch my understanding of the human condition and your willingness to connect it to the natural world. Thank you for this- today especially.
Hello Rachel, Thank you for sharing. "Grief of visceral memory" is so apt and takes me back to my own experience with infertility. We carry so much in our bodies. Sending you comfort.
Sending you and your family love Anya. Thank you for sharing your grief and mourning. You are absolutely right "Currency with grief, then, is a crucial spiritual technology, a community skill for this moment." Sharing our practices with each other is a beautiful part. xo
I'm sorry for your loss. I saw this sweet book right after I read this and thought I would share. I know it's not really about losing people, but still poignant. Take care
What a beautiful, moving column. As a Jewish psychiatrist, however, what I found missing in reform Jewish shiva practices was any recommendation or standard for conducting morning rituals for best friends, in my case my best friend for over 70 years.
I hear you. Friends are so important. I've been surrounded and held up by my friends this week. I hope you have found ways to honor your friend that are meaningful for you.
Thank you for this, and for creating and holding space for your loved ones during this time. Maybe we will find it in our human nature to care for each other on that larger, inhuman scale.
I was so touched by this beautiful tribute, and want to express my heartfelt condolences to you, especially to Adam, and your children and to all those family members and friends who loved your father-in-law. With my deepest sympathy and love,
