I think that cutting down is the first step. Especially if you are trying to show your children something meaningful in to world. How can they work to save the oceans if they've never seen one? I learned sensitivity and curiosity travelling in my younger years and now I can give a little of that to my kids through the experience of other cultures and travel in a thoughtful way. Supporting ecotourism is a good place to start. I hate to pass the buck to industry, but corporate travel needs to step up and cut down.

Thank you for writing this, and opening a conversation about a difficult subject matter. I e resigned myself to looking at coffee table books to destinations I’d love to travel to, and scaled back expectations. I think Alice above is 100% correct. I also think, however, it’s why organizations that have exhibits that show us difficult-to-see places — like the reefs of the Phillippines, Indonesia etc are so crucial, and need to be supported. Also, any efforts to bring people closer to be surrounded by nature entirely can change perceptions. Maybe another approach is to try and change our everyday routines to try to make up, even if those daily routines are not as impactful on a daily basis.
